twenty-five | The sound experience
Anniversary join-in project

based on the
Prelude in C major, The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846 by Johann Sebastian Bach

Kapfenburg castle has been part of the lives of the people of the region for centuries, since 25 years it’s been the home of the Foundation Kapfenburg castle - and the home of music, art and culture. Every event, every concert and every guided tour of the castle is an invitation to preserve as a lively meeting place. With success - more than 333,000 guests have visited the cultural events since 1999.

As a lasting symbol of the connection between the castle, the foundation and the people, the sound installation "fünfundzwanzig" (twenty-five) is being created to mark the anniversary. The musician Sebastian Bartmann will create it from hopefully numerous audio files of Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Prelude in C major - because everyone can take part, the more the merrier. It doesn't matter how well the piece can be played. Taking part is what counts!

How can I take part?
Play the Prelude in C major (or a few bars of it) on the piano or another instrument and record your performance. The piece can also be hummed.

Can I listen to the prelude somewhere beforehand?
You can find an example of what an audio recording could sound like here:
To the stream: Click
To the download: Click

The whole prelude in C major is available here: Click

How do I get the sheet music?
The sheet music can be downloaded free of charge here: Click

How can I record the audio file?
Most mobile phones have apps for voice memos, a recorder or a dictation machine installed as standard. If this is not the case, simply search for "free audio recorder" in the Play or App Store. The WhatsApp voice message function can also be used.

Can I also send a video?
Unfortunately, videos are not possible.

What format does the audio file need?
The format doesn't matter. If you have professional equipment, you are welcome to send us the file as WAV (24 bit, 48khz).

Where do I send the audio file?
By WhatsApp to +49 1523 76 08 988
or
By email to festival@schloss-kapfenburg.de

Until when can I send in the audio file?
The deadline is Friday 17 May 2024.

What happens then?
Sebastian Bartmann will listen to all the audio files sent in. He will then use the sounds to create a touching and dazzling sound installation.

Participation is completely anonymous. All personal data such as mobile number/chat or e-mail address/mail will be deleted after the audio file has been saved.

Where can I listen to the finished sound installation?
The world premiere will be at the opening of the 25th Festival Schloss Kapfenburg during the performance "da!SEIN | fünfundzwanzig". The Junge Philharmonie Ostwürttemberg and the piano duo imPuls, Sebastian & Barbara Bartmann, will perform under the direction of Uwe Renz. The performance will be followed by a big anniversary fireworks display. Anyone who would like to be there live can order tickets in our shop: Click

The sound installation will also be an integral part of the small museum at Kapfenburg Castle and will be available on our YouTube channel, among other places.

25 years Kapfenburg Castle Foundation
Innovation within old walls

We have been based in the former castle of the Teutonic order since October 1999. Erich W. Hacker turned the organisation, which initially had one employee, into an institution of national importance; Moritz von Woellwarth took over as Academy Director in April 2021 and successfully led the music school academy out of the coronavirus crisis. In our anniversary year, we are more than hopeful for a future with many exciting projects - both old and new. Innovation within old walls. Since 25 years.

20 years education & health
Why health should part of every musicans the repertoire

The Education & Health department is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. With our educational work, we are pioneers in the areas of prevention and health for musicians in Germany.

Making music means much more than just mastering an instrument. It promotes and challenges the physiological, emotional and cognitive abilities of musicians in equal measure.  Therefore it's important to promote all three levels and keep them healthy. Only people who feel comfortable in their bodies can play or sing expressively - regardless of age.

This goal can be easily achieved with the right methods. For example, warm-up exercises and mental training can optimally prepare the body and mind for playing an instrument or singing. Integrating aspects like this into music practice is becoming increasingly important.

Since 2003, our "Education & Health" department has been committed to sensitising musicians to the topic and showing ways of prevention. Over the years, a holistic programme for the health of musicians has been developed - for all of them from an early to old age.

An overview of our educational work can be found here

gesunde musikschule® - New Mentors
8 new mentors in Germany

The German-Basque project with Netflix star Itziar Ituño is the first act of the Festival 2023.

El Viaje. Bidaia. The Journey. This is the title of an extraordinary German-Basque project, a poetic-musical adventure written by Marcus Englert and Xabier Zeberio. The play not brings actors from both countries on stage and was developed by them. It is directed by Agurtzane Intxaurraga, Netflix star Itziar Ituño is one of the protagonists. The world premiere will take place on Friday, 21 July, at Kapfenburg Castle. One day later the production can be seen in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Performances in the Basque Country are also being planned.

El Viaje tells the story of a group of travellers who set out together into the unknown in a strange and exciting world. Rock merges with classical music, the music with poetry and the action on stage with a breathtaking light and video installation. The work is the result of months of intensive cultural and human exchange across language and national borders.

THE MANY FACES OF SUSTAINABILITY
Is it even possible to hold sustainable events? And what can and must event venues do to so?

We have taken up the challenge.  Writng her master's thesis Lisa Jäger from Aalen University took a close look at our facility as part of her master's thesis, she was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Holzbaur.

A guide produced in parallel to the thesis not only shows that we are on the right track, it also gives other event organizers and visitors suggestions on what they can do themselves to actively promote sustainability.

The guide's in German, you can download it here.
